Venus in Astrology

Venus in astrology represents love, attraction, pleasure, values, and money, including how you give affection and what you find beautiful. Your Venus sign describes a style of relating and enjoying life, not a verdict on your worth or your future.

What Venus means in astrology

Venus is a personal planet, with themes you can recognize in everyday choices: who catches your eye, how you express affection, and what feels worth enjoying. Its connection with beauty and taste can show up in the clothes you reach for, the music you replay, or the atmosphere you create at home.

In traditional astrology, Venus is called the lesser benefic, associated with pleasure and harmony; Venus emphasizes attracting and receiving, while Mars emphasizes pursuing and acting. The planet is named for the Roman goddess Venus, whose Greek counterpart is Aphrodite. Its glyph, ♀, is a circle above a cross. In the sky, Venus can appear as the morning or evening star, although it is a planet, not a star.

Venus also concerns harmony, but agreement is not the same as satisfaction. If keeping things pleasant means always saying “whatever you want,” practice naming one preference before agreeing to plans. Its connection with money concerns what you value and enjoy, not predictions about your income.

Where Venus is at home, and why detriment isn't bad

Venus rules Taurus and Libra; in either sign, its dignity is called domicile, meaning “at home.” Venus is exalted in Pisces, another traditionally supportive placement.

Venus is in detriment in Aries and Scorpio, and in fall in Virgo. Dignity describes how readily a planet's themes fit a sign's style, not your ability to love or deserve affection. Detriment and fall can suggest more tension to work with, not a worse person or a doomed relationship.

Choose your Venus sign guide

Find Venus or ♀ in the Birth Chart Calculator and note its sign, which may differ from your Sun sign. Choose the matching guide below to explore that placement’s element, modality, ruler, and dignity, and how it shapes Venus’s love, attraction, pleasure, and values themes.

The guides cover Venus in all 12 signs: Venus in Aries, Venus in Taurus, Venus in Gemini, Venus in Cancer, Venus in Leo, Venus in Virgo, Venus in Libra, Venus in Scorpio, Venus in Sagittarius, Venus in Capricorn, Venus in Aquarius, and Venus in Pisces.

Then compare another sign to see how the same subjects (affection, attraction, pleasure, and values) can take a different form. Use the descriptions to notice patterns in your life, not to rank yourself or decide who you should love.

How long Venus stays in a sign

Venus usually spends about four to five weeks in a sign. When retrograde, its stay in one sign can extend to about four months.

That extended stay is a reason not to estimate your Venus sign from a rough calendar alone. Use the placement in your birth chart to choose a guide, rather than assuming Venus changes signs on a fixed monthly schedule.

Which Venus signs are possible for your Sun sign

Venus is never more than about 47° from the Sun. That means your Venus sits in your Sun sign or up to two signs on either side of it, so there are five possible Venus signs for each Sun sign.

Morning star and evening star

When Venus is in a sign behind the Sun in zodiac order, it rises before the Sun and appears as the morning star. When it is in a sign ahead of the Sun, it sets after the Sun and appears as the evening star.

Some astrologers read a morning-star Venus as more impulsive and an evening-star Venus as more reflective. Treat this as one optional layer of interpretation rather than a firm rule.

Venus retrograde

Venus turns retrograde about every 19 months, and each retrograde lasts about 40 to 43 days.

The 2026 Venus retrograde runs October 3 to November 14, 2026 (UTC). It starts in Scorpio and moves back into Libra on October 25. The previous one ran March 2 to April 13, 2025, moving from Aries back into Pisces.
