Moon Sign Calculator
This free moon sign calculator shows your Moon sign and degree; without a birth time, it checks for a sign change and shows both possible signs and the local change time when needed. Enter your birth date and birthplace, then add your local birth time or select ‘Time unknown.’
Calculate your Moon sign
Calculator inputs: birth date, local birth time, a “Time unknown” option, and birthplace city search.
The calculator belongs directly below the introduction, before the explanatory sections. No account or contact details are required.
What is a Moon sign?
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied when you were born. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac, so check that other tools use the same system when comparing results.
The Moon moves about 12 to 15 degrees each day, which means your birth time can sometimes change the sign you get. On other days, the Moon stays in one sign throughout the entire local calendar day.
How to read your Moon sign result
Start with the sign, then read the degree. The sign names the part of the zodiac containing your Moon. The degree measures the Moon’s position within its sign; it is not a score or a measure of how strongly you express that sign.
If you calculate without a birth time, the displayed position is calculated for noon local time. Even when the sign is certain, the noon degree is not necessarily your Moon’s degree at birth.
In a wider chart, the Moon is commonly labeled with a crescent glyph, ☽. After sign and degree, you can look at its house, major aspects, and birth phase; those are separate chart details, not confirmed outputs of this calculator.
A house identifies a chart sector. Aspects describe angular relationships: conjunction is 0°, square is 90°, trine is 120°, and opposition is 180°. Birth phase describes the Moon’s position in its cycle relative to the Sun.
Treat your result as one piece of your birth chart, not a complete description of you. Use the Birth Chart Calculator for broader chart exploration, and compare interpretations with your actual experiences rather than making every reaction fit a label.
Moon sign vs. Sun sign vs. Rising sign
Your Sun sign, Moon sign, and rising sign are commonly grouped together as your Big Three. They are separate chart placements, so knowing your Sun sign does not automatically tell you your Moon sign.
The rising sign sets the first house in the whole-sign house system used here; the next sign becomes the second house, and so on. Because the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, calculating it and establishing houses requires a birth time.
For a broader starting point, use the Big Three Calculator or read Your Big Three. You can also continue with the Birth Chart Calculator to explore beyond this single placement.
Why your birth time matters and what to do without it
The Moon’s daily movement means that birth time sometimes determines which of two signs is yours. If the Moon stayed in one sign for your whole birthday, an unknown time does not prevent you from identifying that sign.
If a change is listed, a birth before the displayed local switch time belongs to the earlier sign; a birth after it belongs to the later sign.
If your approximate birth time falls close to the switch, keep both possibilities open. A birth certificate or family record may help narrow the time, but recognizing yourself in a description cannot establish when you were born.
Without a birth time, the calculation uses 12:00 noon local time and does not assign a rising sign, Midheaven, or houses. Noon is a calculation reference, not a guess about your actual birth time.
How the calculator works and why results differ
The calculator uses the tropical zodiac and the open-source astronomy-engine ephemeris, which provides calculated celestial positions accurate to about one arcminute. An arcminute is one-sixtieth of a degree, and the position calculation runs in your browser.
Your local birth time is converted to UTC, a shared time standard, using your birthplace’s historical time-zone and daylight-saving rules from the IANA time-zone database. You do not need to work out a historical UTC offset yourself.
The tropical zodiac anchors its starting point to the March equinox. Sidereal systems use a star-based reference instead; Vedic astrology commonly uses a sidereal zodiac, and Rashi means zodiac sign. In a Moon-sign context, Chandra Rashi refers to the Moon’s sign. This calculator provides a tropical result, not a second sidereal result.
When calculators disagree, compare the birth date, time, birthplace, and zodiac system first. A reference-system difference is separate from an incorrect time-zone or daylight-saving setting, which can also change the calculated position.
The calculator is free and requires no sign-up. Nothing is stored, and your birth data stays in your browser except for the city name, which is looked up to obtain coordinates.
Moon sign FAQ
Can I find my Moon sign from my birth date alone? You can leave the birth time unknown, but use your birthplace so the calculator can check the relevant local day. If the Moon changed signs, it shows two possibilities rather than treating one as certain.
How accurate is the result? The underlying astronomical positions are accurate to about one arcminute. Uncertainty in your birth time is separate: a precise calculation cannot recover a time you do not know.
What house is my Moon in? A Moon sign alone does not establish its house. Houses use the rising sign as their starting point here, so an accurate birth time, ideally to the minute, is needed.
Which Moon signs are most compatible? A Moon sign result should not be treated as a relationship verdict. Use interpretations as conversation prompts rather than reasons to accept or dismiss someone.
Next steps: from Moon sign to reading your chart
Write down your Moon sign, its degree, and any uncertainty about your birth time. Keeping those separate helps you distinguish what the calculation establishes from what still needs checking.
Then explore Your Big Three or What Is a Birth Chart? Use astrology to consider tendencies and ask questions about yourself, not to prove your character or predict your fate.
How this is calculated
Positions use the tropical zodiac and the astronomy-engine ephemeris (accuracy about 1 arcminute). Your local birth time is converted to UTC with the historical time-zone rules of your birth place. Houses use the whole-sign system.
