Planets in Astrology Meaning

In astrology, planets describe different parts of your experience, including identity (Sun), emotional needs (Moon), communication (Mercury), love and values (Venus), and action (Mars). Their meanings describe tendencies you can explore in your birth chart, not a fixed future.

What the planets mean in astrology

A planet tells you what part of your experience you’re reading; its sign describes how it is expressed. Its house is the life area involved, and aspects (the angles between planets) describe support or tension.

The Sun and Moon are luminaries, or lights, included among astrology’s traditional “wandering stars.” Pluto remains part of astrological interpretation even though astronomy classifies it as a dwarf planet.

Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces have two rulers because traditional and modern astrology use different rulership systems. Their traditional rulers are Mars, Saturn and Jupiter; their modern rulers are Pluto, Uranus and Neptune, respectively.

Personal, social and outer planets

The personal planets are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Jupiter and Saturn are social planets, while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are outer planets, also called transpersonal or generational planets.

Some sources call Jupiter and Saturn “outer” or “personal,” so check which grouping a writer means. Because Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly, their signs are shared across age groups; read their houses and aspects for a more individual picture.

How to read the planets in your own chart

Use the Birth Chart Calculator to find your placements. A label such as “12°♏34′ ℞ in the 3rd house” means 12 degrees, 34 minutes of Scorpio, retrograde, in the third house. In a birth chart, ℞ records apparent backward motion at birth. It does not make a planet bad or predict setbacks; read it alongside that planet’s themes, sign, house and aspects.

Try this sentence: “My [planet: what] expresses itself [sign: how] in [house: where].” For Venus, compare your reading with how you show affection, choose a treat or decide what you value.

Start with your Sun, Moon and rising sign, also called the Ascendant, then your chart ruler (the planet ruling your rising sign). Next read Mercury, Venus and Mars, followed by Jupiter and Saturn.

Different house systems can place the same planet in different houses: whole sign assigns one complete zodiac sign to each house, while Placidus uses time-based divisions. Switching systems changes the house framework, not the planet’s zodiac position. An empty house does not mean that area of life is absent; astrologers also consider its sign and ruling planet. Several planets in one house bring several planetary themes into the same life area, rather than guaranteeing a particular outcome.

Without a birth time, you cannot reliably identify houses, your rising sign or your chart ruler. The Moon’s sign may also be uncertain.
