Saturn Return Calculator
This free Saturn return calculator finds every exact return to Saturn’s birth degree and the broader window when Saturn is in your natal Saturn sign. Enter your birth date and birthplace, plus your birth time if known; otherwise, calculate without a birth time. <!-- Place the existing Saturn return calculator form here, before the explanatory sections. -->
How to read your Saturn return result
Your natal Saturn is Saturn’s position at your birth; transiting Saturn is its moving position. A return happens when those positions match by degree, a precise measurement within a sign.
Start with the exact-pass dates. Retrograde motion (Saturn’s apparent backward movement) often produces three crossings within about a year: forward, backward, then forward again. These are repeat passes within one return, not three separate returns. A single exact pass is also possible.
To answer “Am I in my Saturn return now?”, manually compare today’s date with the listed passes and same-sign window. Saturn’s cycle is about 29.5 years: first returns fall around ages 27 to 30, second returns around 56 to 60, and third returns around 85 to 89.
How long does a Saturn return last?
An exact pass marks a particular crossing. When several passes occur, the interval between the first and last gives you another measure; the first date alone does not describe the whole return.
The calculator also lists Saturn’s window in your natal Saturn sign. Its circuit averages about 2.5 years per sign, but that average is not your personal start or end date.
An orb window measures time within a chosen number of degrees of the birth position. This calculator’s broader window is sign-based, not a fixed-orb calculation, so different sites may measure different durations.
Find Saturn in your own chart
1. Open your Birth Chart Calculator result, find Saturn’s symbol, ♄, and record its sign and degree.
2. If your birth time is known, locate its house. Whole-sign houses count the rising sign as house 1, then each following sign as the next house. Symbolically, Saturn concerns boundaries, responsibility, and lasting commitments: its sign describes your approach, while its house identifies the life area.
3. Find the houses occupied by Capricorn and Aquarius. In traditional astrology, Saturn rules both signs, linking their houses to its interpretation. This rulership convention is described in William Lilly’s Christian Astrology, Book I.
4. Check other natal planets for conjunctions, squares, and oppositions to Saturn: separations of 0°, 90°, and 180°. These traditional aspects also appear in Lilly’s Book I. For this checklist, use a 3° orb, which is an allowance on either side, not a calculator setting.
5. Compare Saturn’s sign with the same-sign window and its degree with the exact passes. Treat these symbolic connections as reflection prompts, not predicted events; omit house interpretation without a birth time.
How the calculator works
The calculator uses the tropical zodiac and astronomy-engine, an open-source ephemeris (a source of calculated astronomical positions). Its positional accuracy is about 1 arcminute, or one-sixtieth of a degree. It calculates Saturn’s position rather than adding 29 years to your birthday.
Your local birth time is converted to UTC using the birthplace’s historical time-zone and daylight-saving rules from the IANA time-zone database, rather than assuming today’s clock offset.
Calculations run in your browser using astronomy-engine, not the Swiss Ephemeris. Positional accuracy is not a tested timing-error limit, particularly near a station, when Saturn appears to pause before changing direction.
Why birth time matters and what you can do without it
You can calculate a Saturn return without a birth time because Saturn moves slowly. Without a birth time, these dates are calculated from noon local time and should not be treated as verified exact dates.
Birth time matters much more for house placement. The rising sign changes roughly every two hours, faster or slower depending on the sign and latitude. Use a time accurate to the minute when possible.
Without a birth time, the chart has no rising sign or houses. You can still use the return dates and same-sign window; recalculate if you later find a reliable birth time.
Saturn return FAQ
What are the second and third Saturn returns? They repeat the same cycle around ages 56 to 60 and 85 to 89: Saturn reaches its birth position again.
What happens around ages 7, 14, and 21? Dividing the roughly 29.5-year cycle gives approximate quarter-cycle markers near 7, 15, and 22: a square, opposition, and another square to natal Saturn. These are angular relationships, not returns; actual dates depend on Saturn’s motion.
Is this a Vedic calculator? It uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to the March equinox; sidereal systems commonly used in Vedic astrology use a star-referenced starting point. Signs are equal 30° divisions, not the unequal astronomical constellations (see Encyclopaedia Britannica, “Zodiac”). Sign labels can therefore differ; compare calculation methods rather than assuming a particular date difference.
Is it free, and is my information stored? It is free, requires no sign-up, and stores nothing. Your birth data stays in your browser except for the city name, which is looked up to obtain coordinates.
Do the dates tell me what will happen? They identify an astronomical timing cycle, not a prediction of a specific event or outcome. You can use them as reference points for reflection without treating an exact pass as a deadline for changing your life.
How this is calculated
Positions use the tropical zodiac and the astronomy-engine ephemeris (accuracy about 1 arcminute). Your local birth time is converted to UTC with the historical time-zone rules of your birth place. Houses use the whole-sign system.
