Big Three Astrology Calculator

This free Big Three astrology calculator finds your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign (Ascendant), with a short explanation of each. Enter your birth date, birth time and birthplace in the form below; no sign-up is needed, and you can still check your Sun and possible Moon signs without a birth time.

How to read your Big Three result

Your Sun describes your core identity: what feels central to being you. Your Moon describes your emotional needs and inner world. Your rising sign, also called the Ascendant, describes your first impression and outward style.

Read the three as different roles, not competing personality labels. Try this template: “At heart, I identify with [Sun description], I need [Moon description] to feel settled, and I initially come across as [rising description].” They can pull in different directions: how you introduce yourself may not reveal what you need privately.

This calculator gives signs and short explanations, not degrees. If another chart shows degrees, 0° marks the beginning of a sign and 29° its final degree. A position near a sign boundary deserves a closer check of your birth details; being near that boundary does not automatically make the result unreliable.

To compare the elements and modalities of your three signs, continue with the Big Three lesson.

Find your Big Three on a chart wheel

On a standard chart wheel, look for ☉ for the Sun and ☽ for the Moon. The Ascendant is usually labeled AC or ASC on the left side of the wheel.

Read the sign beside each marker, keeping any degree number with its own marker. This calculator focuses on the three signs rather than a wheel; What Is a Birth Chart? introduces the broader chart.

One layer deeper: houses and your chart ruler

Houses describe areas of life. Natal Sky uses whole-sign houses: your rising sign is the first house, the next sign is the second, and so on. Read the Sun’s house as the life area associated with identity and the Moon’s house as the life area associated with emotional needs.

Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign. Identifying it depends on knowing your rising sign reliably, while house placement also depends on birth time. This calculator displays only your Big Three; the Birth Chart Calculator is a separate tool for exploring your chart.

This lookup uses traditional Western rulerships: Aries, Mars; Taurus, Venus; Gemini, Mercury; Cancer, Moon; Leo, Sun; Virgo, Mercury; Libra, Venus; Scorpio, Mars; Sagittarius, Jupiter; Capricorn, Saturn; Aquarius, Saturn; Pisces, Jupiter. Modern astrologers also assign Pluto to Scorpio, Uranus to Aquarius and Neptune to Pisces; Natal Sky uses traditional rulers for the chart ruler.

Why birth time matters and what to do without it

Your rising sign changes roughly every two hours, but that is an average, not a schedule. Its speed varies with the sign and your birthplace’s latitude. Use your birth certificate time when available, accurate to the minute if possible.

If your time is approximate, make a manual confidence check: repeat the calculation 30 minutes earlier and later, then two hours earlier and later. Compare the rising signs. A change shows that your answer is sensitive to the time entered; this does not establish which time is correct.

Without a birth time, the calculator uses 12:00 noon local time and gives no rising sign. Your Sun sign is usually still identifiable, although a birthday near a Sun-sign change needs extra care.

An exact time is not always necessary for your Moon sign. The Moon moves about 12 to 15° daily; if it changes signs on your birth date, the calculator shows both possible signs and the change time. If it stays in one sign throughout that date, the missing time does not create that same uncertainty.

How this calculator works and why results can differ

The calculator uses the Western tropical zodiac and the open-source astronomy-engine ephemeris, which gives astronomical position calculations accurate to about one arcminute. Calculations happen in your browser.

Your birthplace supplies coordinates and a time zone. The calculator converts local birth time to UTC using historical time-zone and daylight-saving rules from the IANA time-zone database, rather than applying today’s clock rules to every birth date.

If another calculator disagrees, first compare the date, time and selected birthplace, then check time-zone handling and whether both tools use the tropical zodiac. Small differences matter most near a sign boundary. A different house system changes house assignments, not which zodiac system you are using.

Big Three calculator FAQ

Is it free, and is my birth information saved?

It is free, requires no sign-up and stores nothing. Your birth data stays in your browser except for the city name, which is looked up to obtain coordinates.

How accurate is the result?

The astronomical calculations are precise, but uncertain birth details still limit what you can confidently identify. In particular, precise calculations cannot supply a reliable rising sign from an unknown time.

What if my three signs seem contradictory?

You do not need to force them into one description. Compare your outward behavior with your private needs, and use Your Big Three to continue learning.

What is the Big Six, and what should I explore next?

The Big Six adds Mercury, Venus and Mars to the Sun, Moon and rising sign; this tool stays focused on the Big Three. For a closer look at an uncertain result, try the Moon Sign Calculator or Rising Sign Calculator.

How this is calculated

Positions use the tropical zodiac and the astronomy-engine ephemeris (accuracy about 1 arcminute). Your local birth time is converted to UTC with the historical time-zone rules of your birth place. Houses use the whole-sign system.
