What Is a Birth Chart?

By Natal Sky editorial teamUpdated

A birth chart is a map of where the Sun, Moon and planets were in the sky at your exact time and place of birth. Also called a natal chart, it is interpreted in astrology as a set of tendencies, not a prediction of your future.

What is a birth chart?

Your birth chart brings several pieces of information into one picture: planetary positions, zodiac signs, houses and the relationships between them. It maps the Sun, Moon and planets, rather than the individual stars you see at night. “Horoscope” originally referred to this chart, although today you may associate the word with a daily forecast.

Your zodiac sign usually means your Sun sign: the zodiac sign the Sun occupied when you were born. That is one placement within your chart, not the whole picture. Your Moon, rising sign and other placements add different layers, so two people with the same Sun sign can have quite different charts.

Get your chart, then read it with us: Open the Birth Chart Calculator, gather your birth details, and keep your result nearby. You do not need to recognize every symbol before you begin.

What you need to make your birth chart

You need three details: your birth date, your birth time and your birthplace. Use the time to the minute if possible, and use the city or town where you were born, not where you live now. Together, these details establish the moment and location used to draw the chart.

Look for your time on a birth certificate or hospital record; you can also ask family members whether they have a written record. Some certificates omit the time, and a remembered “around breakfast” is less reliable than a recorded hour and minute. Keep any uncertainty attached to the information rather than treating an estimate as exact.

You can use Natal Sky’s Birth Chart Calculator to make your chart. If you cannot find your birth time, you can still learn from some placements; the troubleshooting section below explains which details need caution.

If you compare your chart with another site's, first check that both use the tropical zodiac and the same house system. Different settings can move house placements even when every planet's sign and degree match.

The four building blocks: planets, signs, houses and aspects

Planets describe what, signs describe how, houses describe where, and aspects describe how placements interact. Think of this as a reading framework, not four separate personality tests. A planet’s meaning becomes more specific when you add its sign, house and connections.

Planets: what part of your experience? The Sun represents identity and expression; the Moon, feelings and familiar needs. They are called luminaries, meaning lights, but are grouped with planets in chart reading. Mercury, Venus and Mars (the personal planets) concern communication, relating and action; Jupiter and Saturn (the social planets) concern growth and limits, while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move slowly enough to describe shared generational themes.

Signs: how does it operate? Each of the 12 signs occupies 30° of the zodiac. Elements describe broad styles: fire emphasizes action, earth practicality, air ideas and water feelings. Modalities describe pace: cardinal initiates, fixed sustains and mutable adapts; a sign’s ruler is the planet associated with that sign.

Houses: where in life? The 12 houses organize life topics; their boundaries are called cusps. Use these starting meanings without assuming a house tells you what will happen there.

HouseStarting topic
1Your approach and outward presentation
2Possessions, resources and values
3Communication and everyday learning
4Home, family and foundations
5Creativity, play and enjoyment
6Routines, maintenance and daily work
7One-to-one partnerships
8Shared resources and interdependence
9Beliefs, higher learning and wider perspectives
10Public roles, reputation and vocation
11Friends, groups and shared aims
12Solitude, privacy and what stays behind the scenes

Aspects: how do the parts interact? These are angular relationships between planets: conjunctions combine, sextiles suggest cooperation, squares describe friction, trines suggest ease and oppositions highlight contrasting needs. The Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and IC are different: they are four reference points called angles, not aspects. The Ascendant marks the eastern horizon, the Descendant the western horizon, the Midheaven or MC marks the upper meridian, and the IC marks the opposite point below.

How to read the wheel: an annotated sample chart

Here is a simplified chart for an invented person, described only by placements: Taurus rising, Venus at 14° Cancer in house 3, Sun at 15° Leo in house 4, and Moon at 17° Aquarius with Saturn at 16° Aquarius in house 10. It illustrates reading conventions rather than a calculated birth record.

Planet labels give degrees within their signs, not house numbers.</figcaption></figure>

The wheel can look backward because east is on the left: the rising sign is the sign rising at the eastern horizon at birth. Start just below that left-hand point and follow house numbers downward, around the bottom and back up. The outside ring identifies signs; planet symbols sit inside, and aspect lines cross the center.

This Whole Sign example places the angles on house boundaries for clarity. In other charts, the Ascendant can fall within the first sign, and the MC and IC do not necessarily begin houses 10 and 4 in Whole Sign houses. Always read the labels rather than assuming every wheel has this exact layout.

Birth chart symbol cheat sheet

A glyph is simply a symbol used instead of a name. These are common versions; some charts use alternate designs, especially for Pluto.

GlyphBody or pointGlyphBody or point
☉Sun☽Moon
☿Mercury♀Venus
♂Mars♃Jupiter
♄Saturn♅Uranus
♆Neptune♇Pluto
☊North Node⚷Chiron

The North Node is a calculated point, not a planet; Chiron is a small solar-system body.

Use the sign symbols to identify the zodiac section containing each placement. The degree beside a planet tells you its position within that sign.

♈Aries♎Libra
♉Taurus♏Scorpio
♊Gemini♐Sagittarius
♋Cancer♑Capricorn
♌Leo♒Aquarius
♍Virgo♓Pisces

The five major aspects have these exact angles. An R or Rx beside a planet marks retrograde motion: apparent backward movement as seen from Earth, not literal reversal of its orbit.

Read your own chart in 4 steps

Keep this fill-in sentence beside you: “My [planet] in [sign] in [house].” Expand it as “this part of me, expressed in this style, in this area of life,” then add aspects after the individual placements make sense.

1. Find your rising sign and chart ruler. The chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign; find yours here: Aries or Scorpio → Mars; Taurus or Libra → Venus; Gemini or Virgo → Mercury; Cancer → Moon; Leo → Sun; Sagittarius or Pisces → Jupiter; Capricorn or Aquarius → Saturn. Modern astrologers also assign Pluto to Scorpio, Uranus to Aquarius and Neptune to Pisces; Natal Sky uses traditional rulers for the chart ruler. Then locate that planet’s sign and house: Taurus is ruled by Venus, so Venus leads this example. Taurus is fixed earth, suggesting a steady, practical approach; Venus in cardinal water sign Cancer adds an initiating, feeling-led style to relating. “My Venus in Cancer in the third house” could look like starting caring conversations or remembering details from a sibling’s day; if you expect others to read those gestures, practice stating your affection directly.

2. Read your Sun by sign and house. “My Sun in Leo in the fourth house” connects identity with home and foundations: Leo is fixed fire, ruled by the Sun, so sustained creative expression is a useful theme. You might enjoy making your home a welcoming gathering place, but when hosting becomes about getting praise, ask what would make the evening enjoyable even without compliments.

3. Read your Moon by sign and house. “My Moon in Aquarius in the tenth house” places emotional needs in public roles: Aquarius is fixed air, ruled by Saturn, combining sustained ideas with structure and limits. You might feel settled when you have a clear role in a group project, yet default to explaining feelings rather than naming them; try saying “I felt disappointed” before offering your analysis. Your Sun, Moon and rising sign together form your Big Three.

4. Read two or three tight aspects. An orb is the distance from an aspect’s exact angle; here, Sun opposite Saturn and Moon conjunct Saturn are each 1° from exact, while Sun opposite Moon is 2° away. Symbolically, this brings self-expression, feelings and responsibility into close conversation: you might feel pulled between a home gathering and a visible commitment, so decide which needs attention rather than expecting effortless balance. Also notice any stellium, commonly three or more planets in one sign or house, though definitions vary; our example has only two planets in Aquarius.

Troubleshooting: common birth chart confusions

What if you do not know your birth time?

Your rising sign, houses and angles are unreliable without it because they depend on Earth’s rotation during the day. Many planetary signs may still be usable, but the Moon can change signs, and any placement near a sign boundary needs checking. If you use noon as a placeholder, label it as such, not as your actual birth time, and treat Moon aspects cautiously too.

Why do apps give different results?

First compare birth details, time-zone handling, zodiac and house system. Whole Sign assigns one complete sign to each house, beginning with the rising sign; Placidus uses time-based divisions of the sky’s daily motion, producing houses that may be unequal. Changing house systems can move a planet into another house without changing its zodiac sign, while changing from a tropical to a sidereal zodiac can change sign labels.

Are signs the same as constellations?

No: tropical signs are equal 30° sections measured from the March equinox, not the uneven star constellations bearing the same names. Precession (the slow change in Earth’s axial orientation) has created an offset of roughly 24° between tropical and commonly used sidereal zodiacs today, with the exact amount depending on convention. A constellation-based headline does not mean your tropical Sun sign suddenly changed.

What does an empty house mean?

An empty house contains no planets; it does not mean that area of life is absent or unimportant. With 10 usual planetary bodies and 12 houses, empty houses are normal. Begin with the house’s topic, then consider the sign at its beginning and that sign’s ruling planet rather than inventing a missing experience.

Is a birth chart accurate? An honest note

There are two different questions here: whether the positions are calculated correctly and whether their interpretation is scientifically established. Given reliable birth details and clearly chosen settings, planetary positions can be calculated precisely. That precision does not establish the personality meanings attached to them.

Astrology is a symbolic tradition, not a scientifically proven method for determining your personality or future. You can use it for reflection by comparing an interpretation with observable experiences: how you ask for attention, respond to change or handle a disagreement. Keep what prompts useful questions, question what does not fit, and do not let a chart overrule your choices.

Birth chart FAQ

Is it free to find your birth chart? Yes. Free options include Astro.com, Cafe Astrology and Astro-Seek. You can also use Natal Sky’s Birth Chart Calculator. Have your birth date, time and place ready.

What are your Big Three? Your Sun sign, Moon sign and rising sign. They are three starting points within the full chart, not a replacement for it.

Does your birth chart change? Your natal chart refers to your birth moment, so its underlying positions stay fixed. Corrected birth information or different chart settings can change the displayed result.

What is a kundli? A kundli is a birth chart used in Vedic astrology, which commonly uses a sidereal zodiac. Its conventions can differ from those used in tropical Western astrology.
