North Node Calculator
This free North Node calculator shows your North Node and South Node signs and degrees, plus their houses when you provide a birth time. Enter your birth date and birthplace; birth time is optional, and no signup is needed.
Your result: North Node, South Node and the axis between them
Start with the true-node result. The sign gives its zodiac location, the degree pinpoints its position within that sign, and the house gives its numbered place in your chart. Your South Node is exactly opposite: the opposite sign, the same degree within that sign, and the opposite house when houses are available.
Together, these points form the nodal axis. A useful interpretive approach treats the North Node as qualities to practice and the South Node as familiar habits or skills, not something you must reject. Neither point assigns you a fixed destiny.
Find it on your chart wheel
On a chart wheel, look for ☊ for the North Node and ☋ for the South Node. Match the sign and degree beside each symbol to your calculator result.
Then check the house number, if available. When comparing another app, confirm whether its node label means true node or mean node.
Read your node in one sentence
Try this reading formula: “Move from familiar [South Node sign] habits in [South Node house] toward practicing [North Node sign] qualities in [North Node house].” Treat it as a question to explore.
Use your own result to complete the formula. Treat the South Node as familiar strengths and habits, and the North Node as qualities to practice, not as a requirement to abandon what already works.
Ask yourself: “What comes easily? What would I like to practice?” After a conversation, write down one familiar response, then choose one small alternative to try next time. Let your observations test the interpretation.
Go deeper: three layers beyond the node sign
Next, locate the sign ruler (the planet associated with your North Node’s sign) and its house. Then look for conjunctions, planets close to either node, and squares, planets about 90° from the axis. These connections help you avoid reading the node in isolation.
Use the Birth Chart Calculator to examine your placements together. Keep your node reading provisional while you learn how your chart fits together.
How this calculator works
The calculator uses the tropical zodiac and shows the true node, with the mean node alongside it. Positions come from astronomy-engine, an open-source ephemeris accurate to about one arcminute, or 1/60 of a degree.
Your local birth time is converted to UTC using your birthplace’s historical time-zone and daylight-saving rules from the IANA time-zone database. Houses use the whole-sign system: your rising sign becomes the entire 1st house, the next sign becomes the 2nd, and so on.
The lunar nodes are where the Moon’s orbit crosses the ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent yearly path. Eclipses occur near these points. The nodes move backward through the zodiac, completing a cycle in about 18.6 years.
Calculations happen in your browser. Your birth data never leaves it except for the city name, which is looked up to obtain coordinates. Nothing is stored.
The earliest and latest supported birth dates have not been verified. A supported date range cannot be stated here.
Why birth time matters, and when it doesn’t
The nodes spend about 18 to 19 months in each sign, so many people born within the same roughly year-and-a-half period share a North Node sign. Birth time usually makes little difference to that sign, but it refines the degree.
Without a birth time, the calculator uses 12:00 noon local time and gives no rising sign, Midheaven or houses. For houses, use your recorded birth time, accurate to the minute when possible: the rising sign changes roughly every two hours.
Near a sign boundary, compare the true and mean results carefully. If your birthday falls on a node sign-change day, don’t treat a noon-based sign as certain.
In whole-sign houses, sign boundaries are also house boundaries, so a node sign change can change its house assignment. Separately, an uncertain birth time can change the rising sign and therefore renumber every house.
Why does another app show a different North Node?
The true node includes short-term variations in the node’s motion; the mean node smooths those variations. This calculator uses true node as its primary result and shows mean node alongside it. When comparing apps, match this setting first; neither label is an accuracy rating.
Next, check the zodiac. This calculator uses tropical positions; a sidereal result, sometimes labeled Rahu for the North Node, uses a different zodiac framework.
If only the house differs, compare house systems: whole-sign and Placidus results need not match. Also check the entered time and birthplace.
North Node calculator FAQ
Is my North Node my rising sign? No. Your rising sign establishes your first whole-sign house; your North Node is a separate point with its own sign and degree.
What is a nodal return? It is the node’s return to its birth position, roughly every 18.6 years (around ages 18.6, 37, 56 and 74). These are approximate cycle markers, not predictions.
Is the South Node about past lives? Some astrological traditions interpret it that way, but that is a belief rather than an established fact. You can instead explore familiar habits and skills.
How accurate is the calculator? Its underlying astronomical positions are accurate to about one arcminute. Your result also depends on correct birth details, especially for houses or a sign boundary.
Does my North Node determine my career or relationships? No. Use it as a reflection prompt about what you want to practice, not as a rule for choosing a job or partner.
Current nodes and southern-hemisphere births
Where is the North Node now? Current true-node signs and ingress dates have not been verified here. Your result describes your natal nodes (their positions at your birth), not today’s transit.
Can I use this for a southern-hemisphere birth? Enter your actual birthplace and local birth time. The stated method uses the tropical zodiac and whole-sign houses, but southern-hemisphere location coverage has not been verified.
How this is calculated
Positions use the tropical zodiac and the astronomy-engine ephemeris (accuracy about 1 arcminute). Your local birth time is converted to UTC with the historical time-zone rules of your birth place. Houses use the whole-sign system.
