Venus in Cancer loves in a way that feels like coming home. It values care, safety and shared memories, opens up slowly, and tends to be deeply devoted once it feels secure.

What Venus in Cancer means

Venus is the planet of love, attraction, values, pleasure and money. It shows what you find lovely and how you give and receive affection. Cancer is a water sign, so it works through feelings. It is also cardinal, so it takes the initiative. The Moon rules Cancer, which adds nurturing, memory and a strong need to belong.

Put the two together and you get love expressed as care. You show affection by feeding, protecting and remembering, and you feel loved when someone makes you feel safe.

Quick facts: element water; modality cardinal; ruler the Moon; opposite sign Capricorn; no major sign-based strength or weakness; possible Sun signs: Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo or Virgo.

How Venus in Cancer loves (and what it's attracted to)

On a first date you probably ask more questions than you answer. That's the crab's shell: you're checking whether this person is kind and steady before you show the soft part. You may prefer a quiet dinner to a loud bar, and you'll remember that they mentioned a sister named Ana three weeks later.

Once you feel safe, you text to ask if they got home okay, cook their favorite meal after a hard day, and keep the ticket stub from your first movie. Quality time matters more than grand gestures.

You're drawn to kindness, reliability and people who feel like family. Someone who calls their grandmother can be more attractive to you than flash or status.

Cancer's cardinal energy shows up as taking the lead in caring. You're often the one who plans the holiday meal and keeps everyone connected. With money and taste, you may keep things for sentimental reasons, spend on home and comfort, and save so you feel secure.

The shadow side

You can be easily hurt, and you may withdraw instead of saying so. A short reply text can sting for hours. Try naming the feeling early, in one sentence: "That stung a little. Can we talk?"

Letting go can be hard, whether it's a relationship, a grudge or a box of old letters. You may also start mothering a partner or quietly keep score of everything you've given. Ask for care directly instead of hoping someone notices.

Is Venus strong or weak in Cancer?

Neither, in the main sense. Venus's home signs are Taurus and Libra, and it is exalted in Pisces. It struggles most in Scorpio, Aries and Virgo. Cancer gives Venus no major sign-based strength or weakness: it is neither a home sign nor its exaltation, detriment or fall.

Separately, traditional astrology gives Venus a smaller boost in the water signs, called triplicity. That is why many sites call Venus "comfortable" in Cancer. Some astrologers also weigh whether you were born by day or by night (sect).

How to read Venus in Cancer in your own chart: 6 steps

1. Find it. Open your chart in our Birth Chart Calculator and look for the ♀ glyph (Venus) next to ♋ (Cancer). Venus never gets more than about 47° from the Sun, so Venus in Cancer only happens with a Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo or Virgo Sun. If your Sun is elsewhere, recheck your birth data. Vedic (sidereal) sites use a zodiac about 24° behind ours, so an early-Cancer Venus often shows up as Gemini there.

Illustrative sample chart (not a real person): Pisces rising, Venus ♀ at 12° ♋ in the 5th house, Moon ☽ in ♉ Taurus in the 3rd house, Sun in Leo. There is no "R" beside ♀, so this Venus is direct. On your own chart, find the same four things: the ♀ glyph, the sign glyph beside it, the house number of the segment it sits in, and where the ☽ sits.

2. Read the sign. Start with the themes above: care, safety, memory and belonging.

3. Find the house. You need an accurate birth time for this. The house shows where in life this love style plays out most:

HouseArea of life
1stSelf and appearance
2ndMoney and possessions
3rdSiblings and daily talk
4thHome and family
5thRomance and creativity
6thWork routines and habits
7thPartners
8thIntimacy and shared resources
9thTravel and beliefs
10thCareer and reputation
11thFriends and groups
12thRest and private inner life

The 4th emphasizes home and family, the 7th partnership, and the 12th private affection. These describe areas of expression; they do not change Venus's sign dignity. The rising-sign examples on this page use whole-sign houses, where the rising sign is the entire 1st house. Your chart may show a different Venus house if it uses another system.

4. Find your Moon. Because the Moon rules Cancer, the Moon's sign and house show where this Venus's need for safety really sits. A Moon in Leo needs warm praise to feel secure. A Moon in Capricorn feels safe through reliability and plans.

5. Check aspects and retrograde. Look at the lines connecting Venus to other planets. Venus-Moon aspects connect affection with emotional needs; the aspect type helps show ease or friction. Venus-Mars aspects connect attraction with desire and initiative. Venus-Saturn aspects bring themes of commitment, limits and caution.

An "R" beside ♀ means Venus was retrograde, which roughly 1 in 14 people have. It often turns love inward, so you reflect before you commit. Venus's retrogrades fell mainly in Cancer in 1940, 1948 and 1956; in 1964, 1972, 1980 and 1988 they were centred in Gemini but began in Cancer. A birth year alone doesn't tell you, so check the chart for your exact birth date.

6. Combine it all: "I love by ___ [sign], mostly in ___ [house], and I feel safe when ___ [Moon]." For the sample chart: "I love by nurturing, mostly through romance and play, and I feel safe when life is steady and comfortable."

Doesn't sound like you? Check whether your Moon is in a fire or air sign, whether Mars or Uranus closely aspects Venus, and whether you have Aries or Aquarius rising. Then confirm your birth time. Our Planets hub explains what each planet covers.

Venus in Cancer compatibility

Water and earth Venus and Moon signs tend to feel easiest, because they share your pace and need for security. Capricorn, your opposite sign, is the classic tension and also a complement: you bring warmth, Capricorn brings structure.

These are tendencies, not verdicts. Compare Venus, Moon and Mars across both charts rather than relying on Sun signs alone.

Born with it vs. Venus moving through Cancer now

Natal Venus is where Venus sat when you were born, and it describes you for life; the rising-sign examples below are natal readings. A transit is Venus moving through Cancer now, which colors everyone's mood for a few weeks. Venus usually spends about a month in a sign but can stay up to four months during a retrograde.

The 2026 window ran May 19 to June 13 (past). The next one is July 3 to 27, 2027 (dates in UTC).

Find Cancer's house in your chart, then read this transit as a temporary emphasis on care, comfort, pleasure and values in that house's area of life, not a prediction of a specific event. Use the house table above. With whole-sign houses, your rising sign tells you which house Cancer occupies. Updated October 2026.
